The Fourier transform is central to digital signal processing because it reversibly decomposes a time based signal into frequency components. Operations performed on the frequency components of a time based signal, when transformed by the Inverse Fourier transform result in changes to the time based signal. This conceptual model is the basis of Digital Signal Processing.
